A wonderful achievement for the talented Israeli athlete, who yesterday won the tournament in Bulgaria for his age group and added a shining gold medal to his impressive European résumé.
Alon Abergil, a member of Israel’s national golf team, won yesterday (Thursday) the Bulgarian Open Championship for youth up to age 21, adding another international accomplishment to his young career.
Abergil entered the competition on behalf of the Israel Golf Association, headed by Eliad Cohen, and delivered an impressive performance. In 2025, Abergil won the Israel Youth Championship, and later was part of the Israeli squad at the 22nd Maccabiah Games, which won the gold medal alongside Israel champion Assaf Cohen, Dor Hakham, and Eitan Solomon.
Abergil grew up in the United States and began playing golf at the age of six. He was raised in a family where golf — and especially playing at the Caesarea Golf Club — was an inseparable part of their lifestyle.
Following his victory in Bulgaria and his progress on the international stage, Abergil may receive recognition as an outstanding athlete in the IDF, a status that could allow him to participate more regularly in international competitions and gain the experience needed for his continued professional development.
After completing his military service, Abergil plans to return to the United States and join one of the college golf teams, with Florida and California among the main destinations for the next step in his career.
Alon Abergil said: “This is just one of many tournaments that help me gain experience in Europe and move forward. This journey would not have been possible without the close guidance of Assaf Cohen, Israel’s champion over the past decade, who serves as a role model for me.”
